The Association for Women in Communications - Dallas Professional Chapter
The Association for Women in Communications (AWC) is a professional organization that champions the advancement of women across all communications disciplines by recognizing excellence, promoting leadership and positioning its members at the forefront of the evolving communications era.

The AWC Dallas Chapter was founded in the early 1930s when a charter was issued for the Dallas chapter of journalism society Theta Sigma Phi. In 1972, Theta Sigma Phi changed its name to Women in Communications, Inc. (WICI) and opened its membership to men. In 1996, the name changed again to the current Association for Women in Communications (AWC). AWC Dallas recently celebrated its 75th anniversary.

Disciplines represented within the association include:

  • print and broadcast journalism
  • television and radio production
  • film
  • advertising
  • public relations
  • marketing
  • graphic design
  • multi-media design
  • photography
The list is continually growing as the profession expands into newer media.

Certification Program for Communication Excellence
A national certification program designed to recognize excellence in all areas of communications has been developed by the Matrix Foundation, a non-profit organization which conducts educational and charitable projects in cooperation with the AWC. The program has been approved by the national AWC Board of Directors and endorsed by the University of Washington, School of Communications. To learn more visit www.matrixfoundation.us.

The Power of Certification

"I chose to pursue the Matrix Foundation's Certified Communications Professional designation to validate my long-term career goals in the marketing and communications field. Rather than starting a new certification program requiring additional classes, tests and seminars, the CCP provides professionals with a format to be recognized for existing achievements within the past five years. The criteria allowed me to report my leadership positions as well as my activities in which I had a supporting role. As I went through the process, I was able to recall both professional and volunteer activities that were applicable to earning the CCP and in the end, I had created a solid body of work that reinforced my dedication and commitment to this field. It was very satisfying for me to go through the process and earn the certification, and I would encourage anyone who has reached an established point in their career in communications to pursue the CCP designation."
